Katarina Witt began ice skating when she was five. She was able to prove her skill and was accepted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted children. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, after she was second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. Since then, her elegance and grace have caught the attention of everyone. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's silver medal in figure skating following an intense contest. Her victory four years ago was a bit more tense. Even though she fell short in the free-skating contest, gold was awarded for her performances on the mandatory figures, as well as on the program in short form. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating following her successes in the film industry as an actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she didn't win a single medal, she delighted fans with her seventh place finish. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
